I thought it never happens but after all the rumors, leaked photos and information, removed pre-announcements, etc. today Motorola finally announced the availability of the Motorola MPx220 Windows Mobile Smartphone officially:

ROSEMONT, Ill. - 27 July 2004 - Motorola, Inc. a global leader in wireless, broadband and automotive communications technologies today unveiled the Motorola MPx220 with Windows Mobile software for mobile professionals. This ultimate mobile e-mail device includes an integrated 1.23 Megapixel Camera, Bluetooth Wireless Technology, Quad Band Performance and synchronization with your office.

Having fun is serious business with the quad-band Motorola MPx220, which seamlessly merges the familiarity and power of the desktop and the pocket-ability of a mobile phone, making this the ideal productivity tool to take your office on the road around the world.

"The new Motorola MPx220 is the ultimate device for globe trotting professionals and busy people who want to stay connected without compromising style or high-tech phone features," said Michael Tatelman, vice president and general manager, MOTOPro Products, Motorola Inc. "Once you’ve experienced the MPx220, whether it be e-mail synchronization, moving to the latest hits with the built in MP3 player or even recording your own piece of history using the mega-pixel camera, the Motorola MPx220 is your ideal companion."

A world class phone, the Motorola MPx220 is full of possibilities, packed with features and delivered in one aesthetically pleasing, sophisticated and compact design. The handset makes staying connected simple by providing continuous access to e-mail, IM, multimedia, and business contacts, as well as family and friends. It also boasts the latest in Bluetooth Wireless Technology, advanced downloading capabilities for Windows Mobile and Java applications, a speakerphone and expandable memory. Rounding out its stunning feature line-up is an integrated digital megapixel camera featuring zoom, flash, self-image capabilities, video recorder, camcorder and video playback.

"The Motorola MPx220 with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software enables mobile professionals to easily access their Outlook calendar, contacts, e-mails and tasks," said Suzan DelBene, corporate vice president of the mobile and embedded devices division at Microsoft. "In addition, this device provides a widely supported software platform for corporate line-of-business solutions and 3rd party applications."

The Motorola MPx220 is expected to be available Q4 2004. For more information regarding pricing and product availability in your region, please check with your local Motorola representative.

Finally we also know when it is launched, end of the year - not sooner as previously rumored. Good news and at least the end of all the rumors we've heard since February this year. ;-)

Cheers ~ Arne

I wonder if the MPx is also going to be released Q4 2004, or if we'll see it in Q3?  Any news on it..?

I don't think we will see the MPx until at least Q1 of 2005, at least in the USA..maybe sooner in Europe. I think its safe to say that we will be looking at seeing the MPx220 in about October on ATTWS (same time as the MPx200 in Oct of 2003).

[1] I think exchguy could be right. While I don't have anything confirmed the MPx220 release window could be a good indication for the MPx release as well.
However, if Motorola really plan to release both this year, it bust be long enough before Christmas to catch the X-Mas business. Everything else wouldn't makes sense, especially because I'm sure they will partner with mobile operators where the Christmas business is the most important.

But as I said, nothing confirmed so far, just my personal view. :-(

Does the MPx220 have the ability to use ActiveSync over Bluetooth?

Posted by Arne Hess on 19.08.04 - 12:18:13

[4] Yes, according to Motorola this is planned and supported with the final ROM version! With the current Beta ROM I wasn't able to do it but it's still in a Beta and therefore I trust Motorola's words more than what I see on the device.
