Announced back in March, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 Android smartphone is ready to be launched soon. Just recently, it received the necessary Global Certification Forum (GCF) approval and the GCF just confirmed what Samsung announced already. The Android 2.1-powered smartphone, which features a 4" Super AMOLED touchscreen and a 1 GHz CPU, comes with quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as triband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 900/1900/2100 MHz. Furthermore it supports WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and features aGPS, a digital compass, accelerometer and proximity sensor as well USB 2.0.

However, not announced by Samsung but confirmed by the GCF, it seems the Samsung Galaxy S will also supports 3GPP compliant UMTS video telephony.

The Galaxy S was said to be available in Europe, North America, Latin America, Australia and Asia soon and with today's GCF approval soon might mean anytime this quarter.

Cheers ~ Arne

Arne, I still have the Galaxy in use and wonder if you have heard anything regarding the promissed Android 1.6 Upgrade? Even the Hero gets its upgrade and Samsung promissed the Galaxy Upgrade in February. I need 1.6 to run the latest Google Apps! :-(

Dont waste your money on any android phone because after another new version your high end android phone became outdated.

I'm most annoyed that I bought it exclusively from O2, I'm still paying of my O2 MyHandy contract and that the "Hotline" has no idea what I'm talking about. :-(

hero, do you go around all android forums and post that same comment? honestly if android 2.2 comes out how does that affect the current phone you have? will there be no updates? your argument can be said for any phone can it not?

@Galaxy User: Yet there are no news from O2 (see here as the reply to my question). However, I'm trying to get in contact with Samsung again but I've recently heard that it's looking good. Hope to get more details soon!

@hero: You sound like a frustrated HTC Hero user, don't you? Sure, today's super smartphone might be out soon but show me a single smartphone which isn't? That's the price we sometimes have to pay for innovation. It can't be always future-proof! And as @dib mentioned - what makes the Galaxy S (with Android 2.1) worse if Android 2.2 comes out? And who tells us that there won't be an update? Just because Samsung failed once with the Galaxy, it doesn't mean they will fail forever; especially not because Samsung has a quite reliable track-record for Windows Mobile updates and upgrades!
