AVAILABILITY: Sony launches free NFC SmartTag app for Android - only compatible with Xperia SmartTags

I wrote about Sony's Xperia SmartTag concept before which Sony Ericsson announced back in January. SmartTags, which are based on NFC, allow to launch pre-configured profiles on the phone by simply touching an Xperia SmartTag with an NFC enabled Android smartphone. These profiles can be easily personalized but require a dedicated Xperia SmartTag app from Sony. Now, ahead of the availability of the NFC SmartTags, Sony has released the required Android app which is now available from the Android Market. Unfortunately, it seems that Sony's SmartTag app only works with Sony's very own Xperia SmartTags but not with other standard NFC tags. I've tested the app yesterday without success.

That's indeed too bad since that's what a standard should be. I understand that Sony wants to sell its own SmartTags, which will retail for around 25 Euro (for a pack of four) but this is far more expensive than basic NFC tags you can get from online shops. Therefore I will continue with my own hand-made solution, which I described here before.

While Sony lists its own Xperia S as the only compatible phone, Sony Ericsson said before that any NFC enabled Android phone with Android 2.3.7 or higher will work. So if you have the feeling that you need the stylish Sony SmartTags but don't have an Xperia phone but a Nexus phone only, you are not out of luck at all.

Cheers ~ Arne
