Following last month's announcement, Sling Media also kept its promise and has just released its Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 compatible SlingPlayer, which finally allows Windows RT users, like Microsoft Surface RT owners, to watch their linear home TV and media in a more convenient Metro style. With a Slingbox at home (or where ever), users can now enjoy live or recorded TV on Windows 8.1 devices over a wired, WiFi or HSPA/LTE connection. The SlingPlayer for Windows 8.1 is the perfect companion to Windows 8 tablets or PCs. Sling Media's award-winning SlingPlayer software takes full advantage of the high performance, screen resolutions and video quality of Windows 8.
The touch- and thumb-friendly SlingPlayer for Windows 8.1 is said to be compatible with the Slingbox 500, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD and Slingbox SOLO. Other Slingboxes aren't supported anymore; and requires either a Windows tablet with Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 or a Windows PC running Windows 8.1.
With US$ 14.99 / 12.49 Euro, the app is a little bit pricey, keeping in mind that the initial Windows and Mac OS SlingPlayer was available free of charge. But the web version stays free of charge anyway so this is definitely something for heavy Slingbox users who want to enjoy the convenience of Microsoft's Metro / Modern UI. In any case, Sling Media is also offering a free one day trial where users can test if it works with their Slingbox and PC or tablet.
Meanwhile, if you are a Windows RT user but don't want to invest into the app, the::unwired's SlingPlayer RT web site is here to stay anyway; and it's always good to have a fallback solution!
Cheers ~ Arne
