Today Skype announced a new Skype Beta for Windows Mobile Pocket PC devices which is available from now as v1.2 - Beta.

As before, with the released version, Skype for Pocket PC provides you with the freedom to enjoy Skype on the go, wherever you are and you have a high speed data network (WiFi, 3G or EDGE) connection: home, office or outdoors.

Version 1.2 offers the ability to make Skype to Skype calls as well as Skype Out calls, instant message chats and - which is new - to send and receive voicemail. According to Skype, also the voice quality is improved and the v1.2 Beta now supports the following languages: English, German, French, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Italian and Spanish.

For the best sound quality Skype recommends to use earphones, a device with a CPU of at least 300MHz as well as built-in WiFi. If you don't plan to use earphones, it's recommend you turn on the "echo cancellation" in the Skype application.
If you use an external WiFi card with your Pocket PC (like with the HTC Magician which hasn't WiFi built-in), your devices should have at least a 400MHz CPU.

Cheers ~ Arne

Hello Arne,

can i use this beta on windows mobile 5 smartphones ?

...i'm afraid it is not clear to me whether WM5 is backwards compatible with pocket PC software in general, and of course, in this particular case too...

THANKS

cheers

WM5 is - mostly - backward compatible but keep in mind that this Skype version is for Pocket PCs, not for Smartphones!
There is a Smartphone version in development also and available as Beta but it supports chat only (yet), not VoIP.
So yes, you could use this Beta on a WM5 Pocket PC but you can not use it on a Smartphone, neither WM2003SE nor 5.0.
