According to an article at German "heise online", T-Mobile Germany plans to broadcast 2006's FIFA Worldcup matches via DVB-T based DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast for Handhelds) technology which T-Mobile is going to implement in the cities where the matches will happens.
Since T-Mobile have to buy the required frequencies, an alternative scenario (because of the costs) could be DAB based DMB.
Also Vodafone Germany already trialed DVB-H, a technology - pushed by Nokia and which seems to become carriers darling, instead of using UMTS for video broadcasting (a "reason why" for UMTS was video streaming).
An interesting development and I agree with T-Mobile; UMTS isn't the right technology for video broadcasting (last year I was working as a project manager for a UMTS carrier and was responsible for their UMTS video streaming launch). Right now, T-Mobile is working hard to get the required frequencies for a reasonable price.
