Since Opera's current Technical Preview 2 of Opera for Windows Mobile devices will expire tomorrow, it's good to know that the Norwegians recently released another (again time-bombed) version of it's well done Smartphone browser (which is still in Beta):

The Opera 7.60 Technical Preview release is only for Smartphone 2003 and Second Edition and will not work on Smartphone 2002 or Pocket PC devices!

By Opera, this build has been tested on the following devices:

  • HTC Tanager (aka Orange SPV-E200, Qtek 8080, i-mate Smartphone2, etc)
  • HTC Typhoon (aka Orange SPV-C500, T-Mobile SDA, Audiovox SMT-5600, Qtek 8010, i-mate SP3 and SP3i, etc)

I can add that I'm also using it on the Motorola MPx220 without problems.

Fixes and Enhancements:

  • Fixed encoding problems
  • Keypad shortcut 5 now consistently toggles between loading all or no images
  • Added notification when changing image mode
  • Opera can now be stopped and restarted from the task manager
  • Improved spatial navigation in normal screen rendering
  • Fixed memory leaks
  • Various stability fixes
  • Improvements to memory usage
  • Various rendering fixes

Opera did a good job so far and I'm excited to test the new Technical Preview. While the latest Pocket Internet Explorer version isn't that bad anymore, I miss some functionalities like "full" Java Script support (for instance Opera support adding smiles in the comments by clicking the icon - as you can do on your Desktop as well - but PIE doesn't supports it) as well as surfing with more than one browser windows only.

Cheers ~ Arne

Will Opera be developing a browser for the none phone ppc.
I hope so, I have Opera on my P800 mobile phone and I am quite pleased with it.

[1] So far, Opera has no plans to do so. A couple of folks already asked for it and always got the feedback that Opera doesn't has any plans.
However, maybe it helps to continue dropping the one or the other E-Mail to show Opera that they seriously will miss a business opportunity/market.
