So I was right with my previous thought that the Cingular brand will remains. I think Cingular had enough of the speculation (and it's amazing how many page-views I got from Google with the term AT&T and Cingular). Cingular spokesman Mark Siegel has clarified Ed Whitacre's statements from earlier last week and has assured that Cingular will continue to sell service nationally under that brand.
When forming Cingular, each parent company reserved the right to resell Cingular service under their
own brand as part of a bundle of services including wireline telephone, high
speed data and more recently TV as well (so called triple-play, another
buzz-word in the telecommunication industry). Now that SBC has taken the AT&T
brand, they could resell Cingular's service under their own brand in areas where
the new AT&T is the local Telco. However Siegel maintains that Cingular will
carefully consider any brand they allow the Cingular service to be sold under,
indicating this scenario is not as absolute as Mr. Whitacre's initial statement.
