Now that's a big deal for customers and consumers, especially because it protects their smartphone investments. At today's Google I/O conference in San Francisco, Google has announced that it has worked out a deal with partners which guarantees Android updates and upgrade for at least 18 months! Take it as a kind of extended operating system warranty! According to our information, the deal includes the following manufacturers: HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson as well as the following network operators: AT&T, Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Vodafone. Yet not part of the agreement are: ZTE, Huawei, Orange, Telefónica and O2.

UPDATE: Google has just confirmed the upgrade guarantee for 18 months from device launch, provided that the hardware can support it!

Cheers ~ Arne

Right... we'll see how this goes.  Another piece I read about this said it was an 11th-hour type thing and that when the Ruben guy was directly questioned about it following the announcement, it became apparent the details hadn't been ironed out.
