Back in April, HTC announced that it will provide the long awaited and much overdue Android 2.1/Eclair upgrade for its HTC Hero Android smartphone, one of the few smartphones which is still running the very much outdated Android 1.5 version. Now, HTC Europe has started to roll-out part one of this upgrade. As HTC mentioned in April, HTC Hero users will receive an initial preparatory update which is now or soon available from HTC Europe as on OTA (over the air) update. This morning, HTC confirmed in a press note, that this initial preparatory update is rolling-out this week and that the final Android 2.1 upgrade will be released end of this month (as promised back in April).

Normally HTC is much faster with system upgrades but this time it took them a little bit longer. Google released Android 2.0/Eclair (the base of Android 2.1) - which features some massive contacts/accounts, E-Mail, messaging, camera, browser and calendar improvements  - back in October 2009 but hey, it's finally coming!

Cheers ~ Arne
