All right, another T-Mobile press release is confirming (more or less) that the T-Mobile MDA Vario II is the HTC Hermes: "For fast and easy input of URLs and E-Mails, the MDA Vario II offers a full keyboard as well as a 'trackwheel' for a comfortable navigation. Also it offers a large color-screen which can be also used in landscape. The color-screen also can be used as a view-finder for the 2.1 megapixel camera. As a PDA it also supports many organizer functions" (please note, this is my translation of the original German T-Mobile press release, unfortunately T-Mobile isn't offering this press release in English yet).
So no question, according this specifications the MDA Vario II is the earlier surfaced HTC Hermes and I'm sure T-Mobile will present it on its stand at CeBIT.

T-Mobile Germany hasn't announced a detailed release date other than "early summer" nor a price yet.

Cheers ~ Arne

It's announced as one of two new HSDPA devices, the other one is a BenQ-Siemens phone.

If you take a look at the pictures at infoSyncWorld it should also be pretty clear that it is the HTC Hermes.

I just came back from CEBIT today where I played with the MDA Vario II at the T-Mobile stand.
I have yet to find another phone that offers all the gadgets and standards in one small device and soon to be available in Europe (Samsung had a few nice phones on display with 10 MPix camera, etc but available only in Corea... so what's the point?.
The Vario II has a PDA with MS 5.0, MPG4, Wireless b/g, HSDPA, UMTS, Keyboard, Edge..... basically all in one and it is nicely small. It's a bit heavy but the small size makes it a nice phone with a PDA and a browser to talk on rather than an oversized PDA with phone functions.
Apparently it supports the "push" functions of a blackberry (which have to be installed onto the phone according to the blackberry staff) and T-Mobile might prohibit but will not block VOIP like skype mobile so it makes a perfect gadget for those who travel internationally.
Unfortunately, T-Mobile will sell it Net-locked charging 100 Euro to unlock it so if you know a way to unlock it, please post it on the net!

I just got word from Vodafone Germany that they will carry the Hermes as VPA Compact III, with availability expected in June or July. And here comes the bummer: They say that initially it will not be able to use the built in HSDPA hardware. Only a later software upgrade will do this, with no timeframe given. A HTC problem they say, so this should apply to the MDA Vario II too. :-(( I blogged this here: (in english and german language)
