Interesting. While I wrote in my Samsung SGH-i300 review from Saturday, that the device will be launched with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, instead of the expected Windows Mobile 5.0, "Gears" from CoolSmartPhone.com claims that O2 UK has confirmed that it will be launched (in the UK) with Windows Mobile 5.0 (instead of 2003 Second Edition):
How many of you have noticed that the Samsung i300 has now slipped back to a November release? Well, I have so I thought I should try and find out why. It was previously slated for an October release, so I asked some top bods at o2 what was happening. They've told me that they can now confirm that the o2 (announced here at CoolSmartPhone first) will run Windows Mobile 5.0.
More on this to come, but this is excellent news for anyone considering this particular handset.
I don't want to claim my info is right and Gears is wrong but - and this makes me wonder - the device I got for the review is the final hard- and software how it is in operator acceptance tests and if you ever have seen, how long such a process takes and what it costs, I'm sure they will not switch in the last minute from operating a to b.
So this gives me two possible conclusions:
- a) On the European continent it will be launched with Smartphone 2003 Second Edition first (while there is a good chance to get a Windows Mobile 5.0 update later) and therefore it will come later to O2 UK because they will wait for 5.0.
- b) The "top bods" of O2 UK don't know the difference between 2003 SE and 5.0 (what I don't think at all). So I vote for option a.
At least we know for sure that it is coming, in different countries and networks. The rest (the operating system version), I'm sure we will also figure out over the past days and weeks. But still, makes me wonder.
UPDATE: Just at the same moment, I was writing the posting above, I've received Microsoft's monthly Windows Mobile newsletter and there, Microsoft (Germany) is also announcing the launch of the SGH-i300 (click to enlarge):
However, the last sentence means: "unfortunately this device will be released with the forerunner version Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition". So even Microsoft proves it officially now, that the i300 is running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. And now?
Cheers ~ Arne
