Lufthansa has a pretty long Internet and mobile Internet track-record and it was one of the first companies (at least outside America), which teamed up with Foursquare to bring us the best badges ever (saying this with my Bavarian voice): The Oktober Fest badges in 2011 and 2010. And now, Lufthansa has again teamed up with Foursquare to be one of the very first companies, featuring Foursquare's new "Connected Apps" platform. Following the motto of "living on the badge", Lufthansa invites Foursquare users to virtually check-in with the new "Blue Legends". This Foursquare connected app allows passengers to share information about their journey with others via social networks.
Blue Legends gives users the opportunity to virtually "check in" to airports, lounges and Lufthansa flights but Lufthansa also said in its press release that "This does not take the place of actually checking in for a Lufthansa flight, however". Makes sense! However, users which are checking-in are now receiving dedicated badges from Lufthansa as well, not within Foursquare but as Blue Legends, where passengers are rewarded with ranks and badges for regularly checking in virtually to Lufthansa sites. For example, users can become "Expert Pilots" on the routes they fly most frequently, early risers who check in before 6 a.m. are awarded the "Early Bird" badge and anyone who racks up more than 388,000 kilometers with Lufthansa will receive the "To the Moon" badge. Badge by badge, regular travelers who check in most frequently to Lufthansa sites can become true "legends of the skies".
Blue Legends is available now in a Beta version in the Foursquare gallery or at www.lufthansa.com/blue-legends. Since Foursquare is primarily used on mobile devices, such a travelling app makes sense. As always, the user's position is determined either via radio location or GPS so the app can show nearby locations to check into.
- Lufthansa Blue Legends requires to check-in to Foursquare for the flight by simply searching for it with the flight number as printed on the ticked like "LH123".
- The results should return the flight in form of "Lufthansa Flight LH 123" and that's the flight to check-in than.
According to Lufthansa, the German crane airline has imported all flights into the Foursquare location database but interesting enough, they are not automatically displayed in Foursquare but have to be searched for. Otherwise, airports around the would indeed become a pretty crowdie virtual place which it is in reality already. Anyway, for sure it should be also noted, that Lufthansa is only rewarding its own flights but not BA, KLM or Air France flights!
Lufthansa Blue Legends follows another social app by Lufthansa which was introduced back in 2009 as "MySkyStatus", which allows users to send automatic status updates about their flights to their friends on social networks. Unfortunately MySkyStatus flights are not connected to Blue Legends which means users are not automatically checked-in but have to use Foursquare which is, most likely, the idea behind Foursquare connected apps.
