CURIOSITY: Apple, the Blogs and the Bloggers

ThinkSecret, an independent Apple news site, recently got some inside information about Apple's Retail Store Policy where - not surprisingly - Apple retail employees are ordered not to comment on rumors to customers under any circumstances. Furthermore, while Apple employees are granted permission by Apple to create their own personal Web pages and blogs, they are not allowed to comment on anything related to Apple on such pages. Furthermore, they are prohibited from posting in any capacity on any Mac-related (does it includes iPod related or not? ;-)) Websites or forums, whether they identify themselves as working for Apple or not.

In this context, it doesn't surprise how Apple defines bloggers (no, it's not really Apple but Apple took the definition from the New Oxford American Dictionary, 2nd Edition) as Scott Beale from Laughing Squid found out (screenshot taken from Tiger's Dictionary app):

Hmmm... I'm neither an American nor I'm in the twentieth nor I have an "unhealthy interest in computers" (while my girlfriend might say something different ;-)) nor is the::unwired a blog but as a German I like the word "bläg" (even if I have never heard it before, wonder where New Oxford American Dictionary got it from, at least the German version - the Duden - hasn't have it listed).

But hey, no wonder Apple prohibits its employees to run Mac-related blogs. Which CEO wants to say "this cool new product was developed by a bunch of 'twenty-something Americans with at least an unhealthy interest in computers'". ;-)

Cheers ~ Arne
