While I recently talked about the good, the bad and the ugly things of Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8 releases, Redmond just "detailed" again what Windows Phone 7.x users can expect in Windows Phone 7.8. At the end of the day, it's just the summary of last week's announcement but it also shows that there are most likely no hidden, not yet announced, enhancements but that Windows Phone 7.8 will be the expected Start Screen refresh only. First of all, Microsoft highlights "a bigger, more flexible Start screen" which can be "dressed up in new colors and (which allows users to) choose from three sizes of Live Tiles, easily resized and rearranged with a tap".
Next are the announced "100,000 apps and counting" which are not really related to Windows Phone 7.8 because these 100,000 apps are available today, and can be therefore already used with Windows Phone 7.5. Nevertheless, Microsoft just announced some new partners which joined the Windows Phone party, like "Audible , PayPal, Draw Something, Words with Friends and plenty more are on the way".
Last but not least, Microsoft announced some more Nokia "love for Lumias" and said that "Nokia is providing Lumia owners awesome new features including camera enhancements and a new way to share contacts and track data usage".
Yet totally unknown is how other manufacturers will deal with the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade. While the statement above seems to suggest that Nokia will definitely upgrade all its Lumia phones to Windows Phone 7.8, plans from HTC, LG, Samsung and ZTE weren't announced so far.
Cheers ~ Arne
