During last weeks VON Boston in Boston, Paragon Wireless, a leading dual-mode (Cellular/VoW-LAN) technology provider to global wireless OEMs, cellular design houses, ISP operators, IP-PBX vendors and VoIP operators alike, announced the launch of the world's first SIP-based Windows mobile dual-mode handset.

The hipi-2200 is the next generation in integrated dual-mode handsets. Utilizing Paragon Wireless' proven VoW-LAN/GSM dual-mode voice technology, the hipi-2200 adds the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system to further expand the usability and functionality of this extremely versatile handset. With the built in support for E-Mail, web browsing, the MP3/MP4 player and the camcorder/recorder on a Windows Mobile platform, users can access the Internet, listen to music and take and review pictures all from one easily carried handset, that also serves as their mobile phone. The 1100mAh Li-ion battery offers users up to 4 hours of talk time or 100 hours of standby time, with both GSM and WiFi radios simultaneously active, making the hipi-2200 the only handset users need to carry.

"The hipi-2200 changes the way enterprises - and individuals - communicate with each other. Organizations can immediately measure their ROI, while workers can access all the information they need from one handset. The hipi-2200 joins our product line as a result of our commitment to dual-mode product development, our experience in the handset market, and our continuous improvement to dual-mode technologies such as FMC features, security, power management, roaming, and over-the-air management of handsets. Paragon is able to offer a family of dual-mode handsets which are cost-effective technology leaders," said Ilkka Pouttu, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Paragon Wireless.

The hipi-2200's feature-set takes the landscape of handset technology as we know it today, while focusing on high performance and functionality, including:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0
  • Support for quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and Class-10 GPRS
  • Support for 802.11g W-LAN and comprehensive SIP-based VoIP functionality over W-LAN
  • Greater than 4 hour talk time, 3-4 hours for VoIP call and 6-7 hours for GSM
  • Up to 100 hour standby time with both GSM and W-LAN radios active
  • Seamless W-LAN AP-to-AP roaming in both active talking mode and idle mode
  • Seamless handover between GSM and VoIP
  • Always-on W-LAN and support for seamless handover between W-LAN and GPRS for data applications such as E-Mail and internet browsing
  • Comprehensive security support such as VPN, VoIP over VPN, 802.1x, WPA and WEP
  • For example the hipi-2200 supports logging on to a corporate internal IP-PBX from a hotspot or home over VPN, essentially
allowing users to take their company phone with them on the road with the same call features and number
  • Applications including: Internet, MSN, E-Mail, Web Browsers, and more
  • Full Active Syncing Capabilities with calendar, contacts, E-Mail and other related programs
  • Integrated Windows Media Player

"The hipi-2200 makes a significant statement to the telecommunications community," said Jon Arnold, Principal of J Arnold & Associates. "For the first time, mobile workers, organizations and enterprises alike will be able to meet their computing needs in a cost-effective manner. Technology is changing on a daily basis and to be able to have all of the major programming and connectivity options in one dual-mode handset is a tremendous asset," said Arnold.

A release date or cooperation partner wasn't announced yet but it definitely looks interesting enough (feature- and design-wise) to be released hopefully soon.

Cheers ~ Arne
