EXPERIENCE: Back from Mallorca, where I was way too disconnected

If someone is surprised why it was so silent here the last days - I was at a short notice on Mallorca (Spanish Island in the Mediterranean Sea), together with my girlfriend to expand the summer for some days. Since I hadn't had any vacations this summer, at least I wanted to get some more sun before the winter comes to Munich (soon as I fear).
In addition I thought that "as Blogger I can work everywhere, doesn't matter as long as I have an Internet connection". And therefore, we selected a Hotel which praised its in-room Internet connection.

  • In-room Internet access
  • In/out TV

plus:

The entire reception area as well as the terrace have been equipped with a wireless network, which allows any user to connect to the Internet through a portable computer. Efficient and effective, this wireless network is indispensable for the advancement of technology.

This was too good to be true and for sure, an Internet connection is more important today than it was ever before, especially if you have to maintain two web sites (keep in mind, that I'm also the responsible blogger #1 for digital lifestyle mobile, a German gadget blog).

But, when I've tried both - the Internet connection in the room as well as to find some W-LAN waves in the lobby as well as the terrace, there was nothing. 8O

Alternatively - and that positively surprised me - I had UMTS internationally roaming access to the Spanish MovieStar network! Means I could use my German USIM with the Spanish UMTS network (which I did to get my E-Mails with my HTC Universal) but this alternative is out of the scope (for keeping two websites up to date) because of the costs. UMTS, GPRS and any mobile data traffic are simply still too expensive, especially if you have to use it abroad. Therefore I had two options: A) UMTS internationally roaming without having any money anymore for Paella and delights of the Spanish kitchen or b) no UMTS, no Blogging but getting fresh fish, Vino Tinto and a satisfied girlfriend. The decision was done pretty fast as you can see. ;-)

On a side note: Pretty funny - in former times you have booked a room with sea view and usually you haven't gotten it. Today you book a room/hotel with Internet and you also don't get it; but now, our room had - without having it booked - an awesome sea view. Now it comes to the question to get both in future!? ;-)

Cheers ~ Arne
