Communications seems to do good. Widely unknown, the Taiwanese ODM (Original
Device Manufacture) is doing the same what HTC did in the past - developing and
manufacturing mobile phones for brands (like the O2 Flame for O2 Asia). Now,
Arima Communications has landed additional orders from O2 with shipments slated
to begin during September and October, according to a company executive. Not too
much is known so far, only that the new model is a slide form factor smartphone
that is slated to ship to O2 in Europe. This model supports 3.5G and GPS and is
built on Ericsson Mobile Platform (EMP) version U360. Arima anticipates that
this batch of smartphone shipments to O2 will hit 100k units in 2007.
In addition, Shipments to i-mate are also showing progress. Arima plans to
introduce two 3.5G smartphones for i-mate during the third quarter and one more
based on the Windows Mobile 6 platform during late 2007.
In total Arima will introduce 4-5 new smartphones in 2007 and targets to ship
400k units for the year.
At this point, no further information are given yet - so we have to wait and
see what O2 and i-mate will release later this year.
