GPRS CARD II: The first GPRS CF Card from Audiovox is hitting the street soon

As I wrote some weeks ago, Audiovox is working on a CF sized GPRS card which will become available soon - at least in Germany. Actually I didn't found any information on the US American Audiovox pages but ADVISE Telekommunikation KG, the German Audiovox distributor, already listed the card on its website for a price of around 220 €. That's what Audiovox already told me on CeBIT and I couldn't believe at that time (the price was given with 200 - 250 US$).

I should get a reviewers sample soon, so stay tuned. Here's what the RTM-8000 comes with:

Features:

  • CF Card
  • GSM triple-band card supporting GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz
  • GPRS Class B up to 4 Tx and 1 Rx
  • External antenna
  • Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002 software included
  • Headset for voice communication included

A CF card sized (the sample I saw on CeBIT looked like a Type I) would be perfect as it would works with all Pocket PCs expect the iPAQs (without the jacket). This means that also Audiovox Maestro, Toshiba Genio and Casio Cassiopeia users could start into the wireless world, without using an additional mobile phone!

Cheers ~ Arne

I wonder how long the stand-by time of the Pocket PC will be with a CF GPRS card without external battery!?
Any words about the Pretec card you've announced on CeBIT too?

Arne,

When you say "Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002 software included" you mean drivers or application software? If the latter which programs are available? SMS, fax, phone? Does it come with PPC 2K2 Phone Edition complement apps?

Posted by Arne Hess on 18.05.02 - 00:00:00

@jlp: At least it will be the drivers but I expect application software too.
Unfortunately I still wait for a more detailed feedback too as they promised me to send a reviewers card - however I haven't heard anything more yet. So I don't know which applications will come with the card.
What means PPC Phone Edition complement apps? If you have the PE Pocket PC, you don't need the CF card anymore or wouldn't makes sense at least. For sure you could use the card with a Loox too but where would be the benefit not to use the Loox module but a CF card (without additional battery)?

Posted by jlp on 21.05.02 - 00:00:00

I was thinking about using it on a Casio E-125

the use of using this kind of card over e.g. the Loox module would be double:
- size
- weight
Not really minor aspects about a PDA?!
