HOW TO: GPRS Internet via Bluetooth from Pocket PC 2002 using VoiceStream

Thanks to Microsoft, here is a step-by-step tutorial how to setup the Pocket PC 2002 using a Socket Bluetooth card to connect the Voicestream GPRS network for Internet. This how-to describes the configuration, using an Ericsson R520 but isn't different to Ericsson T39 or T68 GSM mobile phones:

This following are the versions of software and hardware used to create this document:

Device Software / Hardware and version

  • Pocket PC 2002
  • Socket Bluetooth manager 1.0-07
  • Phone Ericsson R520m
  • Voicestream GPRS service PDA plan

It is assumed the phone is not currently configured for WAP use.

Phone Setup

The first step is to ensure your phone is configured to attach to the GPRS network:

  1. Switch your phone on by holding down the No key until it beeps.
  2. Select Menu by pressing the right arrow key until you reach 4 Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find Data Comm. Select it and press the Yes key.
  4. Select Pref. Service and press the Yes key.
  5. Ensure it is set to GPRS and GSM by selecting this option and pressing Yes.
  6. Hit the No key until you are at the main screen.
  7. You should see a small inverted triangle over the signal strength meter to indicate a connection to the GPRS network.

Next let’s configure WAP browsing on your phone and test it. The first step is to build a data connection to use:

  1. Select Menu by pressing the right arrow key until you reach 4 Settings.
  2. Scroll down until you find Data Comm. Select it and press the Yes key.
  3. Select Data Accounts and press the Yes key.
  4. Select Add Account.
  5. When prompted for the name enter GPRS-WAP by triple typing on the numeric keyboard. When the name is complete press the Yes key.
  6. Select GPRS data and press the Yes key.
  7. Select APN and press the Yes key.
  8. Enter wap.voicestream.com then press the Yes key.
  9. Leave User id and Password blank
  10. Select Save and press the Yes key.
  11. Hit the No key until you are at the main screen.

Now let’s configure the phone with a WAP homepage

  1. Select Menu by pressing the right arrow key until you reach 6 WAP Services.
  2. Scroll down until you find WAP Settings. Select it and press the Yes key.
  3. Scroll down until you find Profile 1. Select it and press the Yes key.
  4. Select Rename then press the Yes key.
  5. Enter GPRS as the name then press the Yes key.
  6. Select Chg Homepage and press the Yes key.
  7. Enter Voicestream as the Title and press the Yes key.
  8. Enter http://wap.voicestream.com as the address and press the Yes key. Note to enter :// press they Symbol key which is directly under the Yes key and choose Add Symbol.
  9. Select Gateway and press the Yes key.
  10. Select IP Settings and press Yes.
  11. Select Connect using and press Yes.
  12. Select the GPRS-WAP account you configured previously and press Yes.
  13. Select IP address and enter 216.155.165.050 then press Yes.
  14. Select Data mode then press Yes.
  15. Select Connection less then press Yes.
  16. Press No until you reach the main screen.

Now let’s test the above configuration by browsing to the WAP site configured

  1. Select Menu by pressing the right arrow key until you reach 6 WAP Services.
  2. Scroll down until you see the title you gave previously which should be Voicestream. Select it and press the Yes key.
  3. The phone should say Connecting then Loading then you should see the page. If you do continue through the document. If you do not go back to the beginning and check your settings.

The next step is to setup a data connection for your Pocket PC to use on the phone

  1. Select Menu by pressing the right arrow key until you reach 4 Settings.
  2. Scroll down until you find Data Comm. Select it and press the Yes key.
  3. Select Data Accounts and press the Yes key.
  4. Select Add Account.
  5. When prompted for the name enter GPRS-INTERNET by triple typing on the numeric keyboard. When the name is complete press the Yes key.
  6. Select GPRS data and press the Yes key.
  7. Select APN and press the Yes key.
  8. Enter internet2.voicestream.com then press the Yes key.
  9. Leave User id and Password blank
  10. Select Save and press the Yes key.
  11. Select GPRS-INTERNET and press Yes.
  12. Make a note of the CID= value it is probably 2. You will need this as part of the dialing string in the Pocket PC Setup.
  13. Hit the No key until you are at the main screen.

Pocket PC 2002 Bluetooth Setup

  1. Install the Socket Communications Bluetooth software. You will be prompted to assign a name to your Bluetooth device. The default is the existing name of your Pocket PC. If this is Pocket_PC change it.
  2. Soft reset your device.
  3. Plug in the Socket Bluetooth card. You will see a warning about the radio transmitter. Select Do not show this message again.
  4. You will see a Bluetooth Icon in the menu bar at the bottom right of the screen.
  5. Tap on it to get the menu.
  6. Select Get Connected! And follow the wizard.
  7. Pocket PC 2002 Connection Manager Setup

 

  1. Select Start | Settings | Connections | Connections.
  2. Select the Dialing Locations Tab.
  3. Create a new Location called GPRS.
  4. Select dialing patterns.
  5. Ensure each one is set to G.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Select the Connections tab.
  8. Press the Modify button under Internet Settings.
  9. Create a new dial up connection with the following settings
  10. Click the Advanced button.
  11. Click the Name Servers tab.
  12. Enter the following DNS Server information
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Enter the following dialing string. Replace the number 2 with the CID value you noted previously when setting yup your phone.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Finish.
  18. Click OK.
  19. Click OK.

Pocket PC 2002 Connecting

  1. Open Pocket Internet Explorer.
  2. Browse to a web site
  3. Tap the refresh icon in the menu bar
  4. A GPRS connection should be initiated over Bluetooth and you should be surfing!
  5. If this is successful you may see a Voicestream caching page come up if you do it is a good idea to switch this on for performance reasons.
  6. If this was unsuccessful check the steps to make sure you did not miss anything.
