Over the last couple of years there has been a considerable increase in the use of color displays for PDAs and mobile phones. This rapid transition from moochrome to color displays are generating huge opportunity for makers of such screens. Such increase in demand for color screens may even spark a competition between the different LCD technologies most suited for PDAs and mobile phones.

Monochrome screens are now giving way to the more advanced color screens as the functionalty and features of PDAs and mobile phones improve. One of the main reasons for fast adoption of color displays in cell phones is the rapid decline in panel prices. Both CSTN LCD and TFT LCD prices fell by more than 25% in 2001.

Analysts have forcasted that the growth in the demand for color displays will come from products using the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system. In 2002, 46% of the handheld devices were equipped with color displays. This number is expected to rise to 72% by 2006. AMLCDs will be in 50% of all PDAs sold in 2004, and will continuously grow their share thereafter.
