Following yesterday's launch of Foursquare for Windows 8, Foursquare just announced to start rolling out a new feature which goes past location sharing but has automatic recommendation in focus. With over 4 billion check-ins and with more than 32 million tips, Foursquare's location accuracy has hugely improved and it's said that it can now be proactive recommend - helping users to discover the greatest things nearby without even having to open the app. As before, Foursquare still allows to check in when users want to share with friends but now, Foursquare may give great recommendations even if not checked-in. However, according to Foursquare, the dev team has done a ton of tinkering about battery drain of using background location.
And it's said that Foursquare came over it which is said that we'll barely notice the impact. From internal tests on a bunch of phones, it only increased battery drain about 0.7% per hour, or, over the course of a day, the equivalent of about a 20-minute game of Angry Birds - which is nevertheless a lot.
Anyway, here's how it will work: When you sit down to dinner, Foursquare might ping you with the "can't-miss dish" on the menu. Or when you arrive in a new neighborhood or city, Foursquare will suggest a few places that friends have been and love. Foursquare said "it's like having a ton of local friends stuffed in your pocket wherever you go".
Starting today, the new Foursquare feature is going to rolled out to thousands of Android users. Over the course of the coming months, it's said to be expanding to all Android users and then iOS.
Cheers ~ Arne
