While the service itself is not yet commercially announced, Telefonica's RCS-e client "TU Me" just found its way to the Android Play Market from where it can be downloaded free of charge - for now. I'm not exactly sure what O2 or Telefonica will charge later for TU Me and RCS-e in general, but the carriers around Telefonica, T-Mobile and Vodafone hope that the RCS-e standard will save its messaging revenues. Basically, RCS and therefore TU Me, is an enhanced carrier owned version of WhatsApp. TU Me for instance allows to having secure and private calls and text messages by featuring a conversations timeline, allowing to have free VoIP-calls and texts anywhere to other TU Me users.
Furthermore it allows to automatically find contacts online, it features HD sound on calls and voice messages, allows to share photos, contacts and maps in one tap and search conversations easily.
Since it's using the local Android address book, calls, text messages and shares can be send without having to upload the address book into a cloud. Interesting enough, for a carrier app, TU Me works over WiFi as well as 3G data connections, but for sure it requires an appropriate data plan. TU Me is, by the way, also available for iOS.
Cheers ~ Arne
