OFF-TOPIC: Going through the PC upgrade hell

You may have noticed some lack of updates during the weekend on PPCW.Net and yes, I'm pretty busy right now. While other sites goes through the server hell :-( currently I'm going through the desktop hell... What happened? Well, pretty easy - Friday evening I got a new PC - an HP Pavilion with some great specs:

  • Intel Pentium 4 running 2.44 GHz
  • 512 MB DDR SD RAM (upgraded from the original 256 MB)
  • CD/DVD-ROM Drive
  • CD AND DVD ReWriteable :-)
  • TV Tuner
  • Modem/LAN
  • and some other gadgets

while my previous PC from Gateway wasn't state of the art anymore:

  • Intel Pentium 3 running 933 MHz only
  • 512 MB RAM
  • CD/DVD-ROM Drive
  • CD ReWriteable only
  • Modem/LAN
  • nothing more

and (I'm such a geek) decided to simply swap the HDDs from the old system to the new one in the good hope that Windows XP will know what to do. While this worked great in the past DOS days it doesn't works in the current XP days anymore... :-(
This means I had to go with the XP fix functionality which ended with formatting my disk 1 which normally contains two partitions = "c:" and "d:". While "c" is for the OS and the programs, "d" is for program related files like my Outlook data which includes my contacts, E-Mails and so on. However, XP decided to reformat the complete HDD and ignoring any partitions which ended with one HDD named "c:". No more "d:" and no more files!?!?!? As the result I've lost all my E-Mails, contacts and schedules... :'-(
Thankfully I had a 14 days old backup on my Notebook but at least I've lost 14 days of E-Mails while all missing contacts and schedules was added by my Pocket PC (thanks my dear Pocket PC ;-).

Anyway - currently I'm going to reinstall all apps and try to recover the lost data files which might take additional days to be back again!

Because of this the PPCW.Net maintenance will takes a little longer also. I'm sorry for this.

Cheers ~ Arne
