PHONE EDITION: China Unicom and Microsoft jointly launch the CU928

Another Pocket PC Phone Edition makes it into the market. This time coming from China Unicom NewSpace, a subsidiary of China Unicom, in a joint effort with Microsoft Corporation today launched China?s first CDMA 1X Windows Mobile-based device called CU928. With powerful streaming media functions, it is the first operator-customized device to support China Unicom?s new U-Web mobile data service.

The CU928 is runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC and is the first device that takes advantage of delivering rich data content using Microsoft's Media Player 9. This enables advanced data applications of real time TV, real time video traffic information and mobile data sharing among many others.

CU928 is powered by two chips, an Intel PAX265 400MHz CPU for the PDA part and Qualcomm MM5500 for the telecom part. It comes with 64MB RAM and 64MB ROM and has a 3.5 in. 240x320 pixel TFT-LCD display capable of displaying 64K colors. It also comes with ann integrated 640x480 camera with a CMOS sensor which is capable of shooting at as low as 5 lux. Among its standard connectivity options is the ability to connect via IrDA and Blutooth. Unlike other convergence devices on the market, the CU928 comes with a full slide-down keyboard and full-screen handwriting input.

As the first customized smart phone device to support China Unicom?s U-Web service, it is a combination of a CDMA 1X phone and PDA with a wireless Internet card. With the click of a button, users will go directly to the U-Web site and enjoy the rich streaming media experience.

Based on the high speed of CDMA 1X network, the U-Web service can provide exciting streaming media content such as Mobile Office, Mobile Internet, Mobile Uni-Video, Mobile Movie and Mobile Entertainment. Through Mobile Uni-Video, which will be launched soon, customers will be able to see the person they are talking to on the LCD screen of the CU928.

Windows Mobile is part of Microsoft?s Windows family and provides a familiar interface to help people keep connected and have fun while on the move. With this platform, one can easily sync information, surf the net and use familiar applications including Word, Excel and Outlook

The CU928 measures at 125mm(H) x 69.8mm(W) x 18.7mm(T) and weighs in at 210g. It comes with a 1490mAh Lithium-Polymer Battery giving it a standby time of 168 hrs. It has an MMC/SDIO slot. Bluetooth support includes profiles for Bluetooth 1.1:

  • SPP: Serial Port Profile
  • DUN: Dial-Up Networking Profile
  • OPP: Object Push Profile
  • HSP: Headset Profile
  • GAP: Generic Access Profile
  • GOEP: Generic Object Exchange Profile

Well, if it hasn't an external antenna (something you can't see on the photo) and would have 128 MB I would say it's close to a dream device. Not sure how bulky it is but on the photo it looks fantastic! 8O

And hey, who implemented the Bluetooth profiles!? Microsoft!? ;-)
