PHONE EDITION: New and clearer O2 xda II picture available

After the first available pictures of the new O2 xda, recently published by msmobiles.com and XScale.de, I'm happy to provide you now a much more clearer and larger view to the xda II, which is expected to be released later this year, as mmO2 already announced:

For consumers, the xda II will offer a built-in digital camera and full multimedia messaging capability plus the opportunity to play high quality, color games thanks to inbuilt Java technology. The 65,000 color display ensures that both photographs and games are sharp and clear. Customers will be able to download games from the popular O2 Games Arcade - offering a constantly changing choice of color 'arcade' style games. The xda II will also offer access to O2's music service enabling users to select, retrieve and store the latest chart hits onto the device - and listen to them in CD quality stereo sound.

Overall, the xda II seems to follow the design of the first xda including the rounded bottom and backside which lets me hope that the xda II will work with xda accessories like car kits. Also I hope that the connector on the bottom will not be changed. Removing the antenna seems to be a good idea, so this Pocket PC Phone Edition looks sleeker and will fit better into pockets.
Unfortunately also the xda II seems to include two application buttons (beside the phone buttons) only which is not enough today. Four buttons is - from my point of view - a must but maybe mmO2 will include at least a tool to map several applications to one hardware button (which I don't believe).

O2 haven't announced so far any prices nor any closer details about the technical specifications so let us wait and see what the future brings...

Cheers ~ Arne

Arne,

Even though it only have 2 buttons at the front side of the XDA, if you look closer there are 3 buttons on the left side of the XDA. It could be possible to map those button for the applications.

That's a good idea, I don't know for what these buttons are but I fear they are something like the volume up/down like we have on the HP H5000 series today (volume up/down makes sense anyway for a Phone Edition). So I'm not sure if you can map these buttons or even if you can if it makes sense...

Looks Cool !!! I use Double Launcher (and Fonix Voicedial - Both MUST HAVE Apps) with my TMobile PPC Phone (aka XDA). Agreed more buttons would be nice but with Double Launcher you can map 4 functions to each button anywise.

Wonder whether the Bluetooth will work with the Ericsson HBH 60's and 30's?

If you use PTJogger from Burr Oak Software you can map one button for all applications, dials and built in functions, take a look and you'll understand (http://.../), it means you can use one hand for all operation, also has a neat option to tag sounds so you don't even have to look at the device whilst doing it, great for dialing when driving, and has a neat 'Mute' option.

I had the chance to get a first "in-hand" impression at the IFA with the MDA II wich is the same device only from T-Mobile. Beside the information Arne already posted in this and earlier articles I got some more information about the upcoming MDA II and so probably also for the XDA II:

- available by the end of october in Germany

- removable battery

- they added a backup battery, so even it the battery is out of power no data will be lost

- improved talk and standby time (battery capacity seems to be the same but Xscale processor is using energy in a much smarter way)

- connector seems to be the same (so accesories from MDA should work)

- the three buttons at the lefts side of the device are for adjusting volume (volume of the ringer and the speaker can adjusted seperately), recording messages, camera

- GPRS Class 10 instead of GPRS Class 8 of the MDA

- SD/IO slot

- connector for an external antenna (car use)

- the display is much better (brighter and clearer) than it was on the mda (xda)

- lighter: 185g instead of 198g of the xda

- the device itself is a llitle thicker but also a little more narrow

So I think thats all. G.

Is the infrared port still included? It will be handy for linking to other older devices being used

SMART Communications, Inc., one of the leading networks in the Phils. recently had a promo of the O2 XDA at Plan P800 that is, at PHP800 per month.  I wasn't able to get one for my husband coz he is dying to have one.  Now, you have the XDA II and its so expensive for us to get one.  We're both dying to have one each of this unit, but how?  We can't afford to buy it in cash nor charge it to our credit cards coz after a few months prices suddenly goes down.
