Initially announced two years ago as the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung has recently announced a much improved follower which is called the Samsung Galaxy S Advance; incorporating some Galaxy S and Galaxy S II but also some Google Nexus S features and highlights. Now powered by a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, the Galaxy S Advance runs on Android 2.3.6/Gingerbread with Samsung's TouchWiz enhancements and supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, quadband UMTS/HSDPA+ up to 14.4 Mbps/HSUPA up to 5.76 Mbps as well as WiFi a/b/g/n with AllShare (Wireless DLNA), WiFi Direct, Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC (country dependent). Furthermore it features a 4.0" curved glass Super AMOLED touchscreen which was so far used on Google Nexus devices only.

The Galaxy S Advance comes with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with supporting flash LED, which allows to record 720p HD videos. The front facing camera supports 1.3 megapixel and can be used for video chats and telephony. The 8 GB internal flash memory can be expanded with microSD memory cards. At a size of 123 x 63 x 9.69 mm, the Galaxy S Advance weights 120 g, including the 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery.

Quite Samsung-typical is the button layout which features the center home button and well as the Android-typical back and settings keys.

When announced, Samsung said that the Galaxy S Advance will be available in Russia from February and then being gradually rolled out in CIS, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Southeast and Southwest Asia, Latin America and China. According to yesterday's German Samsung press announcement, the Galaxy S Advance will be available this month in Germany (and therefore most likely in other European countries as well), for an unsubsidized reail price of 494 Euro. Still no word from Samsung if it plans to release an Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade after.

Cheers ~ Arne
