Sony Ericsson's recently announced Xperia ray is one of the tinier Android smartphones. It's only 9.4 mm thin but incorporates the market leading design for which Sony Ericsson has become known. Running Android 2.3/Gingerbread, the Xperia ray is powered by a 1 GHz CPU and supports either quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 900/2100 MHz or quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and triband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 800/1900/2100 MHz. Furthermore are Bluetooth, WiFi, aGPS and other Android-typical sensors on board. The Xperia ray comes with a 3.3" scratch resistant mineral glass WVGA "Reality Display" capacitive touchscreen with Mobile BRAVIA Engine.

On the back, the Xperia ray features a 8.1 megapixel camera with Exmor R for mobile and 720p HD video functionality which comes with a video light LED as well as the device sports a second front facing camera for video telephony and self-portrait photos. At a size of 111.0 × 53.0 × 9.4 mm, the Xperia ray weights 100 grams only and comes with 512 MB of RAM and 300 MB of ROM which can be even expanded with microSD memory cards.

The Xperia ray is an Android phone which supports all Google Mobile and Android services. However it doesn't come with a dedicated search key. Left and right from the physical home button, which also holds a multi-color LED ring for notifications, the ray features touch sensitive back and menu keys which aren't background illuminated at all.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray will be broadly available from anytime September and will be available in gold, black, pink and white.

Cheers ~ Arne
