Announced back in February during the Mobile World Congress, since this month the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini is available commercially across the world. Not running the latest Android version but Android 1.6 only (nevertheless an upgrade to Android 2.1 is expected to be released soon), the Xperia X10 mini is one of the smallest Android smartphones available today. It supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and the European version features dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 900/2100 MHz while the North American version supports triband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 850/1900/2100 MHz. Furthermore it features Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi b/g, aGPS an FM radio, a digital compass and an accelerometer.

Powered by a Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU at 600 Mhz it's not one of the fastest Android smartphones today. But with a size of 83.0 x 50.0 x 16.0 mm only and a weight of 88.0 g it's one of the smallest and lightest. Nevertheless, due to the small size, it only sports a 2.5" QVGA capacitive TFT touschscreen with a heavily tweaked Android user interface to make the use as convenient as possible. The 5 megapixel autofocus camera features a supporting flash LED and is able to record VGA videos up to 30 fps. The smartphones comes with 128 MB of flash memory which can be expanded with microSD memory cards.

Like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the X10 mini neither sports a D-pad nor any other navigation keys but only comes with the Android typical menu, home and back buttons on the front. On the right, the device has the volume up/down rocker and a dedicated camera key. On the bottom, protected by a flap, the device has the micro USB port and next to it the 3.5 mm stereo headset jack

Quite interesting is the fact that the 1320 mAh Li-Ion battery can neither be accessed nor replaced, even if the back cover is removable. However, the removable back cover is for decoration and individualization only because Sony Ericsson offers this back cover in 5 different colors (black, pearl white, lime, red, pink, silver).

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini is now available across Europe and Canada for around 259 Euro.
