Announced back in February at this year's Mobile World Congress, the Sony Xperia P is Sony Mobile's little brother of the Xperia S which was announced back in January. Like all Xperia NXT smartphones, the Xperia P has a simple and strong design but takes it one step further with its precision crafted full aluminum unibody. The phone, which was initially launched with Android 2.3 only is powered by a 1 GHz "NovaThor" STE U8500 dual-core CPU and supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as quadband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, WiFi b/g/n at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, an FM radio with RDS, aGPS and NFC.
The 4" coated mineral glass touchscreen has a resolution of of 960 x 540 pixels, sports Sony's own Reality Display and WhiteMagic technology and is also powered by Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Furthermore it comes with Sony's xLOUD audio technology. The Xperia P's 8 megapixel autofocus camera also features Sony's Exmor R for mobile CMOS sensor and has a supporting flash LED. It allows to record full HD 1080p videos and like all Sony NXT smartphones, the P is also supporting fast capture which means it only takes little over 1 second from sleep to snap - with a single key press. The VGA front-facing camera can be used for video telephony and chat.
The phone comes with 16 GB of internal flash memory and 1 GB of RAM. Since it's not supporting memory cards, the internal memory can't be expanded! The Xperia P weights, a size of 122 x 59.5 x 10.5 mm, 120 grams, including the removable 1305 mAh Li-Ion battery.
The touch sensitive Android menu keys are part of the transparent stripe bellow the screen and sports the Android 2.3 typical Back, Home and Menu keys. On the left, next to the micro USB port, the P features a micro HDMI port which allows to connect the device to compatible TVs and monitors. On the right, next to the power button, the P has its loudspeaker located which makes it one of very few devices which don't have the loudspeaker on the back.
The Xperia P also comes with two Sony Mobile SmartTags which can be programmed to automate tasks.
The Sony Xperia P is available around the world in either black, silver or red. The official retail price was announced with 449 Euro.
Cheers ~ Arne
