Sling Media has yesterday announced the official release of its latest firmware upgrades for the Slingbox 500, Slingbox 350, Slingbox Pro-HD and Slingbox Solo, which contain several new interesting features. Owners of a Slingbox 500 have now access to "Blockbuster On Demand". As part of the firmware and software client update, Blockbuster On Demand is now the premium video service for the Slingbox 500. It allows owners to search, browse, view trailers and rent movies for viewing on their big-screen TVs. However, Blockbuster on Demand can't be used to placeshift Blockbuster movies to remote Laptops, smartphones or tablets. It only works with the connected TV.
With "My Media", customers can now access their personal photos and videos stored on a USB drive when it is attached to the Slingbox 500. Currently only available for PC, Mac and iPhone, customers can view images that are loaded onto the drive; however, Sling Media said that this feature will be soon also available for iPad and Android tablets and smartphones (no word about Windows Phone). Also new is Apple AirPlay support for SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPad. This feature gives Apple TV customers the ability to watch their home TV on another TV - inside the home or at a remote location. Airplay support is available for customers who own a Slingbox 500, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD or Slingbox SOLO.
Also updated was the SlingPlayer for Web which is now including support for Microsoft Windows 8.1 and IE 11 as well as support for Apple OS X Mavericks and Safari 7. Windows RT 8.1 is still not supported and therefore I still recommend the::unwired's "SlingPlayer RT" which supports a couple of latest Slingboxes.
The firmware should hit the affected Slingboxes automatically soon or they have already received it.
Cheers ~ Arne
