Hewlett-Packard Company has introduced a new HP Jornada mobile-services solution comprising the company’s first full-color GSM/GPRS-enabled Wireless Digital Assistant (WDA), a trial package of HP Mobile E-Services and a working relationship with leading mobile operator Orange to trial the WDAs. This solution marks a breakthrough in HP’s commitment to providing complete, ready-to-go solutions for the mobile professional.
The HP Jornada 928 Wireless Digital Assistant (WDA)
The HP Jornada 928 WDA seamlessly integrates the functionalities of a full-color Pocket PC with those of a GSM/GPRS-enabled phone – giving mobile professionals the freedom to manage voice, data and personal information from a single device while enjoying connectivity to the Internet and e-mails.
Ultra-slim and lightweight, the HP Jornada 928 WDA features an intelligent dual-screen design that lets users access phone and Pocket PC functions independently of one another. The main 16-bit color reflective TFT screen delivers excellent indoor and outdoor viewing and provides access to all PDA applications and features. Meanwhile, a second, blue-backlit liquid crystal display (LCD), which remains visible when the protective cover is closed, lets users easily view phone functions and make and receive calls without having to power-up the full Pocket PC unit – thus saving time and minimizing battery consumption.
Inside, the HP Jornada 928 WDA is the first Pocket PC to adopt the OMAP 710 integrated GSM/GPRS modem and application processor from Texas Instruments. The OMAP710 brings high performance at low battery consumption for a host of applications such as mixed multimedia messaging, Internet audio downloads and video playbacks. The tightly integrated architecture, with three processors on the same chip, contributes to the device’s slim form factor, leaving plenty of room for an integrated CompactFlash Type 1 extended slot enabling superior expandability.
In addition, the new HP Jornada has integrated MicroChaiVM software, a voice-activated dialing application, and a unique dual-battery system for extended autonomy. This dual-battery system comprises one integrated and one removable/rechargeable lithium-polymer battery for extended autonomy – an estimated 3 hours talk time or 12 hours PDA usage and 120 hours standby time.
The HP Jornada 928 WDA is based on the latest Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition Software, providing a robust and familiar environment for a host of applications for the mobile professional.
HP has entered into a working relationship with leading mobile communications company Orange to trial the HP Jornada 928 WDA devices on its network. This relationship demonstrates HP’s commitment to working with operators to provide the final link in the service solution chain, taking devices and services off of the shelf and into the mobile professionals’ pockets.
"The combination of a best-in-class WDA, a great bundle of HP Mobile E-Services to trial, and a working relationship with Orange all demonstrates that we are actively bringing together all that is necessary to provide a complete solution for the mobile professional,†said Kok-Khoon Lim, general manager of HP’s Asia-Pacific Personal Computing Division. “We have paid close attention to the design of the new HP Jornada 928 WDA and believe that we have succeeded in delivering a device that genuinely integrates voice and data functionality into one – we’re not simply delivering a phone and PDA in the same casing."
The HP Jornada 928 WDA is expected to be available across Western Europe during summer 2002. A final price wasn't given today.
I should be able to give the WDA a review soon (hope within the next 7 days) so stay tuned for more information.
