With the the previously unveiled screenshots of Google's upcoming Android 2.1/Flan operating system, it seemed Google is going to add its own weather and news application to the next Android version and as it turns out now, Google News and Weather seems to be indeed included. Google News and Weather is a stand-alone application with home screen widgets, which features weather forecasts and latest news - basically the mobile version of Google News - as known from the web. It comes with three widgets: Weather, News and Weather and News which either display the current weather, news headlines which scrolls through automatically or both

A tap to one of the widgets opens Google News and Weather, which can be also launched from the programs menu:

Google Weather is location aware and can either show the weather and forecast of the current location or from a specified location:

The news are not location aware and depends on the handset language. However, users can select from news topic and can even add own topics, which Google News search for. But it's not supporting RSS feeds but just the raw news headlines from Google News:

Weather is part of the Google News and Weather and the first tap. It provides a general 6-days forecast as well as a quite detailed 24 hours forecast (on the middle screenshot the current weather in Munich, on the right screenshots the weather for tomorrow, 12:02 h):

Next to the weather tab are the news tabs, separated by topics. A tap on a headline opens the website with the news. The website is shown in a kind of embedded browser which neither offers zoom functionalities nor a URL input field:

It's not yet known if Google News and Weather will only be part of Android 2.1/Flan or if it will be released as a stand-alone and downloadable version from Google's Android Market as well. However, after supporting Google services like Gmail, Google Maps and GTalk, it's most likely that Google News and Weather will become another Android standard application as well.
Nevertheless, it's quite interesting that this application wasn't released for other platforms, like Windows Mobile or Symbian S60, before.

Cheers ~ Arne

Is the weather provider configurable or is The Weather Channel the only choice?

At least at the moment, The Weather Channel is the only one. Maybe it gets local providers if officially released?
