Networks and the 3 Group today announced a global partnership giving 3's 13.5
million customers mobile access to the digital media stored on their home PCs.
The announcement was made today as part of Hutchison Whampoa's global
X-Series from 3 launch,
which unveiled the true power of mobile broadband.
Working together, 3 and Orb Networks have customized Orb's MyCasting service
specifically for 3 customers and the 3 network.
The new service, called "Orb on 3" gives 3 customers the ability to enjoy all of
their home music, videos, photos, and TV, anywhere they go on any device -- be
it on their mobile, PDA or lap top. Orb on 3 simply streams a person's own
content from their home PC to any device with a Web browser and a media player.
"3 Group just gets it," said Joe Costello, chairman and co-founder of Orb
Networks. "They are the first mobile media company to give their customers
the freedom and choices to use the mobile internet the way it was intended
to be used. Who doesn't want the freedom to control what digital media we
enjoy, when we enjoy it and where? That's the type of media freedom Orb
provides. Hutchison is not running away from the future, they are running
towards it with open arms, ripping down that walled garden and offering up
the best of Web 2.0 services to their customers."
"Orb on 3 unlocks the digital content on your home PC and we will ensure
our customers get the best mobile media experience with Orb, said Canning
Fok, Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa. "Our customers demand a choice
of innovative services and we are delighted to be working with Orb to enable
them to enjoy their media wherever they are over the best network."
Orb's MyCasting application has been customized and optimized for the Hutchison
3 Group networks in each country. The Flexibility of the Orb application allows
Hutchison 3 Group to offer a "3" branded version of Orb for their users' mobile
experience as well as
on other devices like Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and PCs.
The service will be available in the UK in December, followed by other 3 Group
companies in the first quarter of 2007.
