Yesterday I wrote about MSN's Remote Record for Windows Media Center PCs, today I got a notification about Orb (thanks to Phillip Torrone) which is even better than MSN Remote Record and what I was waiting for for a long time because "Orb takes the home out of home entertainment"!

Orb from Orb Networks gives you secure access to the digital media on your home PC through a simple web interface. Orb streams your content safely to virtually any Internet-connected device. Just install the Orb software on your PC, then access your media anywhere.

General Orb Features

  • Fast mobile media access: Simply open a Web browser on a computer, laptop, PDA or cell phone, log-in and select what you want to view or hear from your personal library. Orb's technology takes care of the rest. Orb's technology determines the best format, codec, bit rate, display capabilities, and network bandwidth available for a particular cell phone, PDA or laptop to view or hear the content. The media is streamed securely from the user's home PC to the user's device to provide fast mobile media access.
  • Access from Internet-connected mobile devices: You can use Orb on many types of mobile devices including various Internet-connected cell phones, PDAs and Laptops. Once Orb is installed on your home PC, Orb can recognize your remote device and quickly connect you to your home computer to access your media files.
  • Automatic bandwidth detection: When you connect from a mobile device or remote PC, Orb will automatically detect your connection speed and the upstream bandwidth available from your home PC. Orb will then stream content at the highest quality available to you, providing the best possible experience your device and bandwidth can support.
  • One simple interface: Orb makes it easy to access your media with its user-friendly interface. Simply choose a service, see a list of your media and select your content of choice. Your media will then be streamed directly to you anytime, anywhere.
  • Streaming digital media: With Orb, your digital media is quickly streamed right to you. No more hassles with long download waits or files that are too big. Your content remains on your PC, providing you with the security and control you want.
  • myOrb: Once you sign-up with Orb, you will be given a user name and password for entry into the myOrb, members only, area of the website. Here you will be able to access your home PC and view all of your media content. In addition, myOrb provides numerous features to customize your settings, organize your content, change your password, register your remote devices and manage your account. myOrb even contains valuable information on beta releases, tutorials, tips, and more. All information is secure and confidential.
  • myOrb Favorites: Get all of your Favorites, all in one place. Bookmark your favorite TV shows, music playlists, photos and web results for quick access. Orb even provides the "favorites" feature from within each Orb service area.

Orb on your PC

Orb on your Pocket PC

As you can see above in the Pocket PC sample, Orb automatically launches the appropriate player (like for audio of video files), if required - like Windows Media Player on Pocket PC.

Right now, Orb is available for Microsoft Windows XP (Beta) and XP Media Center Edition PCs. To get the best results like live-TV access, Windows Media Center 2005 is recommended.
While Orb is currently available in the U.S only more geographies will be supported in 2005 (which is required for TV-listings aka EPG, etc).

The basic Orb service costs US$ 9.99 per month or US$ 79.99 per year. Additional users can be added for US$ 3.99 per month  or US$ 29.99 per year.

Well, I think my Orb-account is something my UMTS carrier will like. :? I really need a UMTS/GPRS flat fee now!
