According to a recent Financial Times report, HTC is said to "work with Amazon on a range of smartphones as the e-commerce company steps up efforts to compete with Apple and Google". That's exactly where HTC has its roots, ODM'ng high-quality devices for partners (remember the lineup of Compaq iPaq Pocket PCs, the first O2 Xdas and T-Mobile MDAs as well as Orange's first Windows Mobile smartphones). While HTC's latest venture in this space - the HTC First Facebook phone - failed badly, one of the Financial Time sources said that the Amazon and HTC are developing three devices, and at least one is "at an advanced stage of development". And it would definitely makes a lot of sense for Amazon to work with such an experienced partner.
For sure, HTC declined to comment on the Financial Times report, but HTC CMO Ben Ho was quoted that HTC is "always exploring new opportunities". Also in London, at the recent Frequencies by HTC event, I haven't heard anything. But maybe, Amazon is this kind of white knight HTC needs most at the moment.
