Applian recently released Super Explorer for Pocket PC but Super Explorer isn't just another file Explorer for Pocket PCs but also a FTP client which works with "Drag and Drop"

Super Explorer makes it easy to copy, move and delete files using a handy drag-and-drop interface. Plus you can adjust the size of the folder and file windows by dragging the separator bar.
What's more, Super Explorer is a fully functional FTP client. With the same, easy-to-use interface.

  • Copy files to and from the Internet using FTP
  • Easily copy and move files and folders on your Pocket PC
  • Flexible interface lets you see more files or more folders
  • Choose a display font that works best for you
  • Change file properties
  • Customize display columns
  • Easily beam files to other devices

The File Explorer

Unlike the inbuilt Pocket PC File Explorer Applian's Super Explorer works with a split screen and a directory path tree. While you see in the upper screen the directories and subdirectories of your Pocket PC in the lower screen you see all files within the selected directory.

By selecting a directory or file you get different options like changing the properties

But you can also delete and rename the files and directories as well as opening the selected file.

A little bit more tricky is copying or moving a file. Here Applian added a kind of Drag and Drop which you already know from your Desktop:

Just select the file you want to move and drag it to the right folder. New release the stylus and Super Explorer asks you what you want to do with the file. You can copy and move it and you can even create a shortcut.

The FTP Explorer

Beside this typical offline functionalities, Super Explorer contains also a comfortable FTP client which lets you access your companies FTP server or even your home PC. That's great for everybody who have to transfer data from or to the Pocket PC. For example you could upload with this functionality your latest holiday pictures to your website or get the latest documents from your company server.

First you have to add a new FTP account and you can not only add one but more which is pretty useful if you need one for your private and one for your professional access.

Super Explorer lists all your FTP accounts beside your Pocket PC on the top view and after connecting the FTP server you can navigate within it like navigating on the Pocket PC directories.

From here you can also copy files through drag and drop in both directions. From your Pocket PC to the FTP server and vice versa but also deleting or renaming files on your FTP server.

Final Conclusion

Super Explorer really is a super Explorer and it's a great enhancement for your Pocket PC, if you have to handle lots of files. It doesn't give you access to your files only but can be used for renaming, moving and copying files also and you can change the attributes of your Pocket PC files; something which isn't possible with the original Pocket PC File Explorer. Also creating shortcuts is pretty easy and you can even change the target file of shortcuts.

A little bit wondering makes me the fact that Super Explorer doesn't supports pop-up menus if you tap and hold the stylus to a file. I don't know, maybe this is a technical limitation because of the drag and drop functionality but I would like to see added this function in the next version/update, if possible.

A great tool is that beside the Explorer, Super Explorer also includes a FTP client and that it works like the FTP Explorer in Windows XP. With this functionality you can move files very fast from/to your Pocket PC and this might be interesting for everybody how record huge amounts of data like digital photos. With Super Explorer you could upload the pictures from your Digital Camera to your Pocket PC and from here to your Desktop PC.

Applian Super Explorer is available standalone for US$ 19,95 from Applian's website. A 15 days trail-version is available also.

Cheers ~ Arne

Hi Arne,

Two Questions:

1. How does this explorer rate against Resco File Explorer? Is the FTP capabilities it's primary differentiator?

2. Can you name a few good electronics places here in Munich? I've been assigned from the US to work here for the next 6 months?

vielen dank,
