If you are a wireless geek, doesn't matter if you use W-LAN or GPRS, Hudson Mobile's IP Dashboard might be that utility for you, you can't live without anymore.
IP Dashboard is constantly aware of the state of your network connection, allowing you to instantly see, right from your Today screen, whether or not you are connected to a (wireless) IP network. The network activity icon, located on the left side of the plug-in window, shows network activity to and from your Pocket PC device.
Right from the Today screen you get the complete overview about the following information:
- Connected IP Address
- Connected Subnet Mask
- Current Meter Reading
- Default Gateway
- DNS/WINS Servers
- DHCP Status
- Time Connected
This information is provided in an automatic rotation of stays fixed on the screen (configurable):
By tapping on the left PC icon, the Data Rate Monitor appears which provides you an overview about your current up- and download activities. With the [+] and [-] buttons you can increase/decrease the the scale to fit from GPRS networks to W-LAN networks.
The Data Rate Monitor is always one tap away from the taskbar or Today screen, and gives you instant visibility into the throughput you are seeing from your wireless network or application. The monitor updates in real time, and shows over 2 minutes of activity.
The tree icons on the right side of IP Dashboard gives you fast access to the configuration menu and a general data overview as well as a small and easy to use Ping utility:
You can completely customize the information displayed (or not displayed) by IP Dashboard, and even alter the order in which it is scrolled in the display. In future releases of the product, even more network information items will be available.
Noah from Hudson Mobile already informed me, that they are working on an updated version which will includes
the following improvements:
- Network Profiles - save and restore settings quickly for each network you use
- Static IP, DNS, WINS Configuration
- UI improvements:
- Small "Pin" icon to stop scrolling of information temporarily
- Small "resize" icon lets you switch from compact to full view without leaving the today screen
- Improved behavior with other items on the today screen, improved redraw logic
- Data rate dialog is faster, more interactive
Version 1.1 should be released anytime this week and will be free for registered customers (as all updates
should be free).
So far, vxUtil was the only workable IP tool for me on Pocket PCs as it gave the required overview if I was attached to a DHCP server and provides me information like the current IP address. It was one of my "must have" tools until IP Dashboard was released. Hudson Mobile's IP Dashboard is a great, easy to use and useful utility to keep me informed about my IP status as well as connection speeds and isn't useful for W-LAN networks only but for GPRS networks also as I can also monitor my connection speed during the past 2 minutes as well as checking if my connection is still alive with the build-in Ping utility.
What I really like is that it takes the adapter to monitor by itself: So if you plug your Pocket PC into the cradle, the serial port is monitored, if you activate your Wi-Fi card (or build-in Wi-Fi module) it monitors this port and if you connect your Pocket Pc via Bluetooth with your mobile phone that connection is monitored. You don't have to configure it all the time again; however it's customizable enough to even let you select one
port only, if you don't wish to monitor all possible connections.
Even if IP Dashboard wasn't designed for GPRS connections for me it also became a must have tool for these connections; overall you can say that IP Dashboard works with every IP connection and gives you that information you might need many times during wireless sessions!
