summer is coming soon (if not here already) and I thought about better
protecting my latest gadget - the Samsung SGH-i600 Windows Mobile Smartphone
while biking and commuting. As a matter of fact, as useful and good looking
leather cases are for Pocket PCs, I don't like leather cases for my mobile
phones - I never used a leather case for a mobile phone since 1993.
I either carry my phones in my hand or just want to drop it into my pocket and
that's it. So I came across JAVOedge's innovative JAVOSkins which are designed
to protect devices from scratch and impact damage while retaining the sleek look
of the device. Perfect I thought and the fine folks from JAVOedge send me one to
be reviewed here and used after.
The JAVOSkin features strategically placed cut-outs to allow maximum usability.
With these cut-outs, using the case would feel as though the case wasn't on the
device at all. JAVOSkin is easy on your hands with it's soft texture. Made out
of specially blended silicon materials, it can stretch and flex to cushion your
device from hard bumps and falls. The EAD (Enhanced Anti Dust) coating gives the
JAVOSkin case a softer surface to grab and significantly reduce dust which would
accumulate on the surface. With this low-profile case, you get the best of both
worlds: the device will remain fully usable, stylish and protected.
The sales pack includes the JAVOSkin (which is available in three different
colors: Solar Grey, Frosted White and the reviewed Bronze), an optional usable
and detachable belt clip and a lanyard.
The device is put into the JAVOSkin, which basically acts as a second skin or
glover and this is done easily within seconds:
Right after the device is put in and the skin is adjusted your device is
ready to use again but now is better protected than before:
One of the good things of the JAVOSkin is the fact, that it also protects
function keys (like the Send/End buttons as well as the typical Windows Mobile
and the volume keys) while cut-outs are left where it makes sense (like the
power jack, the microSD card slot as well as the thumbwheel). This means that
the device hasn't to be removed from the JAVOSkin, to charge it or to exchange
the microSD card. However, neither the keyboard nor the screen is protected (so
you might better want to use a screen protector in addition as well) and to
exchange the battery, the JAVOSkin has to be removed as well:
The JAVOEdge JAVOSkin is the perfect solution I was looking for to get my
brand new device better protected. As I said, I don't want to use leather cases
but this second skin is way better for my purpose since its low-profile is
adding no more than 1 millimeter to my devices' size.
The soft and anti-slip texture feels comfortable and gives a great grip and I'm
sure the special blend of silicon material will protects pretty good against
bumps and scratches (even if I hope I'm not bumping it). But anyway, especially
for biking and commuting I feel much better now where I know the device has a
minimum kind of protection while carrying it in one of my pockets.
While the BlackBerry version fits well, it misses one cut-out - the one for
the front facing video telephony camera which isn't tragic at all since I barely
use UMTS video telephony.
The only problem is, that the JAVOSkin neither accepts the extended battery nor
an extended battery version is available so if you want to use the JAVOSkin with
your BlackJack/i600 as well, you are stuck with the standard battery.
The JAVOedge JavoSkin is available from JAVOedge as well as online retailers
(like Amazon) for US$ 23.95 only - which isn't too much to protect your brand
new device. JAVOSkins for other devices are available as well.
By the way - JAVOedge offers a 10 % off by using the coupon code: JAVOAPR0327
(case sensitive). The coupon expires April 30th.
