As you know, I am big fan of MTUX's SideX platform which is a new applet platform designed for Pocket PC 2002 and Pocket PC Phone Edition. It's simple but powerful with great applets. It provides a unique and new user interface for Pocket PC and let you use a lot useful applets in a smart way (see my previous SideX 2002 review and SideX 2003 preview).
Now, MTUX released a new cool applet which makes SideX 2003 even more powerful and useful: Pims.
The Pims applet includes two functions: "Pims" which is an Inbox, Calendar and Task summary viewer and "Contacts" the easy to find Contacts viewer.
Pims gives you a fast access to your new E-Mails, today's and the next two days appointments as well as your open to-do's.
Pims gives you a fast overview about your appointments and tasks, doesn't matter which application you are currently using on your Pocket PC because it's always on top of the current application. Pims also allows you to jump directly to the appropriate program like Inbox, Calendar or Tasks.
Contacts is a pretty simple but fast contacts viewer. It only includes the name and all contact details like phone numbers and E-Mail addresses.
Because it is grouped to letters, depending on the names in your database you can jump through your contacts pretty fast.
Unfortunately functionalities like dialing (on a Pocket PC Phone Edition) or creating a new E-Mail aren't included today but I hope to see this fixed later with an updated version. However, creating and sending a SMS message right out of your contacts works pretty well!
Pims for SideX 2003 is a pretty useful, handy and easy to use tool to give you a fast access to all your PIM related information and as many of you still use a Pocket PC mostly for PIM stuff, this might be the right addition. While I love Pims (which I use daily) and its functionalities to give me a quick and easy access to my appointments and tasks as well as latest unread E-Mails; there seems to be much space for improvements with for Contacts. Creating a SMS right out of Contacts is pretty good but I wonder why it is limited to SMS messages only and doesn't support E-Mail as well and for sure calling the selected contact.
However, overall Pims is a great and useful addition for SideX and if MTUX will release an updated version anytime, I'm sure it will be free of charge for registered users of version 1.
Pims is available from PocketGear for $2.99 and also a trial version is available.
Cheers ~ Arne
