As I'm one of those guys, who can't live without their beloved Windows Mobile Smartphone Feature "Profiles", I decided to have a look at Pocketmax phoneAlarm. Which is available since the last three weeks in the version 1.53. In my early Windows Mobile 5.0 days I've tested the older version 1.32 and got my problems with it, but I'll blame it to the early Windows Mobile version.

First of all I will say, this tool is skinable, so don't wonder if you have seen it before and it looks now quiet different. The Today Plug-In offers various information which depends on the skin you use, in my case you'll see Home, Bluetooth, missed calls, Voicemail, SMS, Email, battery and signal strength status and Config.

With a tap on the Home symbol an popup appears, in which you'll able to change your profile, mute and unmute your device, or mute it for a time range. The Bluetooth symbol turns on or off your Bluetooth interface, so you'll be able to control your interfaces not only by the Comm Manager. By tapping on the missed calls you get access to your missed calls and so on.
So you see, the Today Plug-In offers not only information it's also offering control over your mobile device.

As the name of the tool tells this tool is not only a software which can manage your Profiles it also notifies you if you have missed a call, received an SMS or an Email. These Alarms are customisable, you can set the interval, how many times the alarm will repeat and so on.

But back to the Profiles. In a Profile you'll not only able to set the volume and ringtones of your Pocket PC, there are a lot more things like, various alarmtones for SMS, Email or Voicemail, activate or deactivate Bluetooth / Wlan or enable Push Email. Here's the complete list of settings:

  • Volumes
  • Sounds
  • Customisable repeat per alarm type
  • Ringtones
  • Radio on/off
  • Infra red on/off
  • Bluetooth on/off
  • WLAN on/off
  • Call Forwarding
  • SMS Forwarding
  • Backlight level
  • Shutdown timeout
  • Start program
  • Load skin
  • Push email enable / disable

It's possible to change the seven available Profiles time-based, location-based (by cellid) and also by appointment category.

Sorry I wasn't able to test the location-based switching, because I got no serial, so I was only able to test the features which are available Trail-Version. There are still some more features like:

  • Billing calculation
  • Detailed GPRS volume tracking
  • Location-based information (change profile dependent on current location!)
  • Call and SMS forwarding support in each profile
  • WLAN control via profiles
  • Skin rotator element to display actual information

You'll see these are realy cool features, and I'm sure the 18,50 Euros are really goog invested.

Especially the "Billing calculation" is real cool feature, you got complete control over your costs. You'll be able to set all your contract details like, monthly fixed costs, peak and off-peak costs and also peak time, free SMS, free minutes, including data volume and so on. An other nice feature is to set numbers to which you got free minutes, in my case i got an partner contract and I'm able to talk to the partners in the contract 100 minutes per month for free, so I got the full control over it.

Final Conclusion

As you have seen, this tool is quite exstensive, and offers a lot of cool features. I'm using it now since three weeks and I learned to love it. If I have to rate it I'll give respective 8 out of 10 points. There is one point missing, because no software is perfect and the other because I could not test the full functionality.
