REVIEW: Sync and charge your iPAQ through a USB port

Some weeks ago, Gomadic Corp. announced the availability of its Power Sync Cable for iPAQ 3800. Thanks to them I got a test sample, find here My Personal View of using a single cable for Pocket PC synchronization and charging.

Charge your iPAQ while synchronizing data with Gomadic’s new iPAQ Power Sync Cable. Custom designed for the mobile professional who wants to reduce the number of cables required to support life on the road.
By connecting this 3-foot long cable between the base of the iPAQ and a standard USB port, users can simultaneously recharge their iPAQ 3800 series PDA while auto synchronizing data with their desktop or laptop PC. No bulky cradles, no AC power adapters and no additional software are required!

I've used the cable heavily within the last weeks, it was with me on Möbius 2002, on CeBIT, in my office and where ever me and my Notebook was. And yes, it works great, just by plugging it into the USB port of your Notebook or Desktop PC. After attaching the other end of the cable to the iPAQ the synchronization starts by itself (don't forget to activate USB on the Active Sync settings). And also in the same moment charging of the iPAQ starts. This concept is exceptionally interesting since you need the separate adapter for the iPAQ H3800 to charge it without docking station. While you could carry the adapter with you, which only would charge the device, you could also carry the Power Sync Cable with you which do the same plus synching the iPAQ.

I found only one limitation of this concept which makes sense, the iPAQ isn't charged if the PC is switched off which makes sense. This means that you have to power up - e.g. your Notebook - if you are traveling and want to recharge your iPAQ. However, this works also with the battery of a Notebook. So I recharged my fully drained iPAQ during a 3 hours flight by using my Notebook battery. This was very handy as I didn't need my Notebook right after the arrival but my Pocket PC.

Final Conclusion

The Gomadic Power Sync Cable is really a very useful accessory, specially now where no power-plug is included on the iPAQ 3800 series and the price of US$ 19,95 is very reasonable. So if you need to recharge your iPAQ during trips I can really recommend it. Also if you are looking for a additional solution to sync and charge your iPAQ on two different locations - like at home and in the office, the Power Sync Cable could be the right choice.

The Gomadic Power Sync Cable is available though Gomadic's online shop.

Cheers ~ Arne
