RUMOR: Is the Samsung SGH-i780 coming to the U.S. as the SGH-i788?

Engadget Mobile found a new Samsung phone, listed by the FCC which is called the Samsung SGH-i788. Unfortunately not too much is known yet but remember, Samsung uses "SGH" for GSM and UMTS smartphones while "i" is used for its Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 smartphones. And if you compare FCC's drawing of the SGH-i788 with the SGH-i780, it looks quite similar. Furthermore, while Samsung tried to hide details of the drawing, if you scroll the FFC PDF quite fast, you can see a square camera whole, centered on the top with a speaker right to it (on the left the SGH-i780, on the right the unmasked SGH-i788):

It would definitely makes sense for Samsung to release another version of the i780 since the i780 is - as so many Samsung smartphones - not a worldwide roamer due to limited frequency support (in this case triband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and singleband UMTS/HSDPA for Europe only).

It's not yet known if the SGH-i788 will also sports GPS and which Windows Mobile version (if any) is used but Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional is most likely.

Cheers ~ Arne

Finally some good news for us Americans. Was envious to your Europeans the first day I read about the I780 here in
Anyone any info which carrier will take it?

Nope, I'm 99% sure that i788 is the version of i780 headed for China, not U.S.

A quick look at the FCC test reports shows that it's only 2.5G GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone - standard for China.

And Samsung usually uses "8" in it's model numbers in the phones for Chinese market. Something to do with lucky numbers over there, i read somewhere
