We heard plenty of rumors of it already, that Microsoft might launch its own phone hardware which might be related to a rumor project code-named "Pink", and which seems to be under development in parallel to Microsoft's Windows Mobile 7. Nevertheless, so far everything was and still is pure speculation. However, it's fact that Microsoft bought Danger some time ago and therefore, this new rumor makes definitely send (maybe even too much sense). Anyway, Apple insider site 9 to 5 Mac just received further information that Microsoft will unleash two new smartphones, probably at CES in January next.

According to 9 to 5 Mac's info, these smartphones are the rumored Pink smartphones and are expected to be manufactured by Sharp (which also manufactured the Danger Hip-Top/Sidekick phones in the past). Furthermore, it's said that these devices will be even co-branded as "Microsoft+Sharp" products.

9 to 5 Mac even said it received some further information about the hardware design. It's said that one device, code-named "Turtle" (which is said to look like a dressed up Motorola QA1) - features a slide-out keyboard and it is meant to be open when being used as a phone.

The other device is said to be a more traditionally-shaped candybar slider and is code-named "Pure".

Furthermore it's said, that the Pink devices will continue to use the App Store model that the Sidekick has employed with over-the-air applications appearing on your phone bill.

All these information seems to be pretty detailed and it's the best we've heard about Microsoft's project Pink so far. Nevertheless, it's definitely better to take this information with a grain of salt since nothing is confirmed. It's yet completely unclear if project Pink exists in real, what it is about and if it is about smartphones and hardware. If Pink and phones really exists, it's also completely unknown if these phones will run on a kind of Windows Mobile operating system or if it will be something completely different.

UPDATE: 9 to 5 Mac has posted a drawing of what they said is expected to be the "Turtle" (see above).

Cheers ~ Arne
