Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 supports a wide range of E-Mail services, right built-in to the operating system and beside supporting Gmail and carrier related E-Mail services, for sure Windows Phone 7 also supports Microsoft's very own Windows Live ID service which is used for a variety of Microsoft services - from Hotmail to Windows Live services like Skydrive to Zune Pass to Xbox Live. And fore sure it makes sense to activate a Windows Phone 7 with a Window Live ID, even if it's not required to operate it. But without a Windows Live ID activation, users won't be able to download apps from the Marketplace or purchase music and videos from Zune.
However, since Microsoft knows the user's E-Mail address, it's also welcoming new Windows Phone 7 customers with a welcome E-Mail.
While the E-Mail doesn't have any user related information or content, it provides a kind of quick-start guide as well as some further information what a Windows Phone 7 can do, including links to websites at Microsoft which provide further information how the camera works, how to get back a lost phone or how to sync music with the Zune Player for Microsoft PCs.
Cheers ~ Arne
