Google Labs' Googles is a new search product for Android smartphones running Android 1.6 (or higher) which connects your smartphone's camera to a Google datacenters in the cloud - becoming an eye to see and search with. It sees the world like you do, but it simultaneously taps the world's info in ways that you can't. And this makes it a perfect answering machine for your visual questions. Goggles lets users search for objects using images rather than words by simply taking a picture with the phone's camera, and if Google recognizes the item, Goggles returns relevant search results. Right now Goggles identifies landmarks, works of art and products (among other things).

How it works:

  • A user's image is send to Google's datacenters
  • Google creates signatures of objects in the image using computer vision algorithms
  • Google then compares signatures against all other known items in their image recognition databases
  • Google then figures out how many matches exist
  • If there are a best match, Google returns one or more search results, based on available meta data and ranking signals

Today Goggles recognizes certain images in certain categories, but Google's goal is to return high quality results for any image. Google Goggles is now available free of charge from Google's Android Market. It supports smartphones either running Android 1.6/Donut or Android 2.0/Eclair. Android 1.5/Cupcake isn't supported.

Cheers ~ Arne
