SERVICE: Will this be the Future of Interactive Services for Wireless Devices?

Is this the feature of interactive news on Pocket PCs and 2.5/3G networks? Last week I found Xinua News Channel (thanks to Olivier for pointing me) which is an interactive, flash based news channel.

The headlines on the Xinua News channel are selected entirely by a computer algorithm FROM thousands of sources, based on many factors including how often and on what sites a story appears elsewhere on the web. Xinua News channel relies on the editorial judgment of online news organizations to determine which stories are most deserving of inclusion and prominence on the Xinua News channel. There are no human editors at Xinua News channel selecting, grouping or even merging the headlines and no individual decides which stories get top placement. While the sources of the news vary in perspective and editorial approach, their selection for inclusion is done without regard to political viewpoint or ideology.

Xinua Ressources are AFP (Agence France Press), Google.

Xinua ensures that you notice news and information that you have designated and only deliver news that affects your life in real time throughout the day. Xinua!
Xinua News channel!

Xinua is Flash based and transports a heavy amount of DATA through the network. This means that it would be to expensive today to use it through wireless IP networks like GPRS and also that today's Pocket PC CPUs needs a minimum setup of XScale. Xinua themselves are talking about a minimum requirement like the HP iPAQ 5400 because of CPU.

However, on future Wireless Pocket PCs this kind of information service could looks like this demo here. And don't forget : A simple touch on the anchorwoman's mouth and she repeats the last news.

Xinua is interesting for me because of two reasons:

  • It selects the most interesting news by a algorithm. This means that this kind of news could become even customized in future by entering keywords, the user is interested in. As more sources added to that database as more detailed information would be delivered.
  • This is a kind of 3G services I was waiting for. I mean video streaming through a 3G network is nice but that kind of Flash based (and personalized) services is even more interesting since you could add links to every news plus adding background information. This is something different than just streaming the latest CNN news to a wireless device!
But the network operators have to learn first that this kind of services needs new tariff schemes and will not work with today's GPRS prices.

But it also gives a good reason why mobile devices like Pocket PCs needs improved and faster CPUs. Until today I didn't saw a real reason - beside the better battery runtime - for XScale CPUs but with this kind of services there is a real requirement for new, faster CPUs.

I wonder when Xinua will be licensed by the first 2.5/3G network operator!? For sure it would add a real benefit for the user!

Cheers ~ Arne

About banwith the advantage between video streaming and Xinua technology is hudge :

Xinua just use bandwith when the anchorwoman read a news (even not when she repeats it as its already cached), more over they dont donwload video but a kind of sophisticated audio i guess, so banwith is much smaller. i just did few tests and i got 270k per news !

So an average of 3 megs for 12 hours usage for 1 category.

Pretty cool!
