Today, Yahoo! released its Yahoo! Go software for Windows Mobile devices. It's Yahoo! Go for Mobile application suite, which was released earlier this year for Symbian based Series 60 devices, includes E-Mail, search, photo upload (Flickr), address book and calendar services, as well as access to Yahoo's news, sports and finance content. Yahoo! Messenger is not included in Windows Mobile editions of Yahoo! Go yet but only available to Symbian users. For sure, Yahoo already offers many of its popular online services in mobile device optimized versions but the software provides a faster, smoother experience and additional features. For instance, users can store E-Mails for reading when they don't have service and can automatically upload photos taken with their cameras into their Yahoo Photos accounts.

  • Yahoo! Mail - Easily manages and stores messages on mobile devices and provides receive notification for incoming mail
  • Yahoo! Search (Local, Web and Image) - Provides Local search, full Web search and Image search to view billions of pictures
  • Yahoo! Photos - Automatic upload of camera phone pictures to a Yahoo! Photos account, view and manage all albums saved on the Web account and download photos from albums directly to the mobile device
  • Yahoo! Address Book and Calendar -- Easy entry, management and back-up of contacts and calendar events
  • Yahoo! News, Sports, Finance and more -- Quick access to the full range of content services including Yahoo! News, Sports, Finance and Movies

Since Yahoo! Go for Mobile was launch back in February, the software has only been available for certain Nokia S60 phones, which run the Symbian operating system. However, while Nokia and Symbian is widely available in Europe and Asia, in the U.S. consumers could only use the software if they got their service from Cingular Wireless and had one particular Nokia phone, said Yahoo spokeswoman Nicole Leverich (also see Alfredo's latest Thought here).
Making the software available to Windows Mobile devices, which includes Motorola's Q Smartphone and Palm's Treo 700w Pocket PC Phone Editions, will nearly double Yahoo's reach. Last year, Microsoft shipped 6 million phones with its Windows Mobile software.

"This is about reach for us. We want to get it on all devices that are in consumers' hands," Nicole Leverich said. "We definitely think expanding the reach of the service to new devices is going to help us continue to grow the service."

"Today's launch increases the number of consumers who can use Yahoo! Go for Mobile to stay connected to their community of friends, personalized content and favorite Internet services," said Marco Boerries, senior vice president, connected life, Yahoo!. "We are making it even easier for more consumers to take the Yahoo! experience with them on their mobile phone."

Yahoo! Go is available now from Yahoo!'s Go site and supports Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphone running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition or Windows Mobile 5.0. It requires about 4 MB space on your mobile device's internal memory and needs Internet access via GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, EV-DO, WLAN or other connections.
