SITE: Beta version of the::unwired mobile up and running

The past days were tough and busy but finally the 1st Beta of the::unwired mobile is up and running and includes both - the front page, the articles as well as the forum for comments and general discussions.

For me, a mobile version of the::unwired is essential since I can not talk about mobility and wireless but not offering a mobile/wireless version of the site. This time, I've tried to bring the same look and feel and experience to the mobile device - a real optimized mobile version instead of a stripped down desktop version and it looks we archived it! :-)

Unlike before with PPCW.Net, the mobile version of the::unwired is using a single URL now; so no more /mobile.php or /mobile/index.php, etc but just theunwired.net and the site does the rest for you (why should you remember the right path if my site can do it for you?) since everything is style sheet based now! So depending on the device (as long as it's not tweaked) you get either the desktop version or the mobile version - with the same URL like theunwired.net/?itemid=1234 or theunwired.net/forum/. This is great for RSS readers also because you just need one RSS URL and can use it on both, your desktop or mobile device and you don't need two different RSS URLs to get the full article displayed correct (as other sites requests). And in my humble opinion the result is just looking great on Pocket PCs and Smartphones:

windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003SE

Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003SE

Windows Mobile Smartphone 5.0

And the best, the automatic device recognition also works with many non-Windows Mobile devices. For instance I've tried it with my Nokia 7600 and a Nokia Series 60 devices and it worked perfect, even if the look and feel isn't 100 % optimized for these devices you can easily access the::unwired anytime from your mobile phone also to stay up to date! :-)

Nevertheless, since it is a (public) Beta it's not finalized yet nor as perfect as I want to get it and I would like to ask for your support since I do the mobile version mostly for you - my valuable readers! ;-) If you don't mind you can be a Beta tester for the::unwired mobile and check it out over the weekend from your mobile device and post your experiences into the comments below. I will try hard to implement your feedback to make the::unwired an even better experience on your mobile device!

Last but not least I would like to ask you for screenshots of the different devices and browsers you've tested. If you have a Palm, Symbian, Series60, 80 or 90 device and you can dump a screenshot I would appreciate it since I'm interested in knowing how the site looks on these devices.

I hope you enjoy the::unwired mobile as much as I do.

Cheers ~ Arne

Looking good.  I just tried it out on my X50v, and it looks really nice.  One suggestion, and maybe it is already there and I didn't see it, is to have a link to the forums on the front page.  I usually have my address bar hidden to utilize the space, and don't want to have to open the address bar and type /forum/ each time I want to go to the forum.  Just a though, and this is obviously a beta, like you said.

Looking good but just like smeg said It would be good if you could add link on the front page to the forums.

Yes, it definately will gets its link from the pull down menu as soon as it is 100 % done. Right now the easiest way and most important I think is to go through the article comments but you guys are right, it needs to be fixed for the final version and it will be!
BTW, this is the first comment I've posted mobile via my Smartphone and I'm amazed how well it works! wink

Congratulations on mobilizing your website. More sites should follow your example. Keep up the good work! More kudos here... http://rickcooper.typepad.com/thepdapro … _is_n.html

Sure it does, otherwise I wouldn't post it as it's up and running... wink

Ok guys, I'm listening you and have added a direct link to the forum from the pull down menu!
So no further excuse not to access the forum while mobile.
For instance I've written this comment while on the way to the airport *with my Smartphone*... ; )

Hi Arne,
as you already have shown it tp me on the 7th this month, it works even better and the gprs volume of the mainpage seems to have decreased again. :-)
This site is a MUST in every ppc favorits! ... as it always was ...
I´m also posting this from my MDA II which is definitively easyer than it was before, will you implement the smilies in the mobile version too?

Looks great, just wondering though, when I look at comments on the mobile version, there seems to be some kind of sig visible that isn't on the desktop version.  Weird.

I would if Pocket Internet Explorer (or Internet Explorer Mobile how it is called now) would support the required JScript which it doesn't do! Therefore I decided to remove it since most of us - as long as you are not using NetFront or Opera (shame wink) - can not use it anyway.

Hm, which signature you mean? Both, the Desktop and the Mobile version have the signature while I left some user information for the Mobile version to make it better readable.

Strange, it seems different now.  I didn't realise the comments were really a forum entry, and I think it's to do with this.  When I looked at the story from the home page this morning, there were no sigs on the desktop version, but there were on the mobile version (by sig I mean eg "this post was made by an unregistered user"etc).  Now it seems to be different though!  I think I may just be going mad. ;-)
