Any Winamp user out here? If so, you might be interested in Winamp's latest soft launched, which AOL (now the parent company of Winamp) soft launch today for its Winamp media player called Winamp remote (Beta). In partnership with Orb, Winamp remote lets anyone with a mobile phone or Windows Mobile smartphone access the music collection stored on the home PC (similar to what Orb's MyCast service also delivers).

First, users needs to install Winamp and Winamp remote, the remote access software for Winamp that was already available before this announcement. Then, users point their mobile browser to to access the songs in their Winamp library at home. The service supports multiple mobile music playback codecs including 3GPP, Real, Windows Media and Flash.

As always, Orb handles all the encoding stuff on the PC and the bandwidth and format of the stream are based on the device the consumer is connecting with. So the experience is optimized based on the network, up- and downstream quality.

Winamp Mobile users can play all supported files from their home music library (which excludes DRM protected files) on to the mobile phone or Windows Mobile smartphone as well as users can define any number of playlists of favorite songs, can rate songs, which will automatically create a list of favorites as well as you can browse your entire library in a number of ways.

Cheers ~ Arne
